A Mayflower Poem

The place for a taste of Britain.

The Mayflower Club

There's a club we have here in North Hollywood
called The Mayflower -- my cup of tea!
When you're British and homesick, you go there
to meet friends who've come over the sea.

It's where all the expatriates gather,
and you'll find them there, singing a song.
At the bar, they are drinking a Guinness,
and you sigh with relief -- and belong.

There are dartboards to try in the corner,
and bangers and mash on your plate.
You can play whist and bridge, if you want to,
or just sit there and chat with a mate.

There are accents from England and Scotland,
from Ireland and lovely Wales, too,
from Australia, Canada, everywhere else,
and there's even a Yankee or two!

Around Christmas, there's always a panto,
where the audience boos or it cheers,
where you see your friends dressed up in costume
telling jokes you'd forgotten for years.

There's the pub night where everyone's singing,
and all year there are dances galore,
with a quickstep and foxtrot, Gay Gordons as well,
and Paul Jones, if your feet aren't too sore.

It's a grand place, if ever you're lonely,
and you miss all the family back home,
and it gets you, like, starting to wonder,
why you ever decided to roam!
